Here are some suggestions to bring some ease to you holiday wardrob-ing headache

Tips on making your cashmere last for seasons to come:
-Avoid rubbing = less pilling. This mean watching out for seat belts, purse straps, and jewelry
-Be careful with fragrance. Fragrance can damage the delicate fibers so make sure your lotion, deodorant, and perfume sprayed areas are dry before putting your garment on
-Store in a plastic bag(away from light and damp areas)- The fibers need to breath
-Wash properly- Hand wash in room temperature water with a gentle soap, soak for 5 minutes then rise. Lay flat to dry. You can also dry clean the sweaters.

Blazers. They come in all sizes, styles, and colors, but every woman should own a black one- this is what we in the fashion world call a 'staple piece'. The versatility of a standard black blazer provides endless possibilities in outfit combinations; you can take it from day to night, classy to sassy, serious to playful.

Ways to wear a blazer:

Casual:Pair with a tee shit, your favorite jeans, and a pair of amazing riding boots, or your comfiest flats.

Work: Pair it with a button up collared shirt tucked in to a pencil skirt or your best fitting slacks, top off with a to-die-for statement necklace.

If planning on meeting the ladies, or even better, a hot date after work try wearing a blazer over a silk blouse and slacks during the day- the do a quick wardrobe change in to a pair of jeans to have a more appropriate date look.- And of course, don't forget to accessories with a few bangles, fabulous necklace, or statement earrings

For a long time blazers were looked at a as piece you wear to work or to a formal gathering, but now with the menswear trend in full force blazers have become a piece that can be worn anytime, in any situation- it's all about how you style it!

Mark Twain once said " The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." So far San Francisco's 'summer' has consisted of fog, a little bit of rain (Rain in July?! really Mother Nature?), and an occasional few day span of sun and 75+ degree weather.

You start the day off in a scarf, sweater, jeans, an boots and you're overheated and sweaty by lunch. When faced with living in such a bi-polar climate a good way to deal is by putting the concept of 'layering' in to effect.

Layering, to some, may be completely overwhelming. Their past attempts have resulted in looking as if they threw on every piece of clothing they own on, and then some.

Well, for those of you who have, and continue to be defeated by layering, I'm here to offer some advice, tips, and trick that will turn you in to a layering pro in no time!

3 layer approach:

Inner layer- The inner layer is the first layer you put on. This layer mainly provides a bit of extra warmth, but can also add color contrast. Most people use camisoles, tank tops, or thin tee shirts as their inner layer

Mid layer- The mid layer tends to be the focal piece of the whole ensemble. This piece is can be a bold pattern dress, a stand out shirt, or even on a more casual day, a tee shit.

Shell layer- The shell layer is the very outer layer. Depending on the temperature this piece can rang from a light cardigan, to a blazer, to a heavy jacket. This layer provides the most warmth, as well as it is the easiest to be removed or put on when the temperature fluctuates

Other tips on layering:

*When layering tops, try using pieces that have different necklines, sleeve lengths, and hem cuts.
*On an extra cold day dry putting a blazer over a vest, or a heavy jacket over a cardigan
*Try adding a blouse under a sleeveless dress
*When layering with a skirt, add leggins or tights for extra warmth and accents.
*When exploring with color use complementing shades, prints, and contrasting colors. Try to not exceed wearing more then three main colors.
*To add an extra detail piece try using a complementing scarf or statement necklace.

BOLD Statements: Metallics

For fall 2010, add some decadence to your wardrobe with metallic fabrics. There were some unforgettable pieces on the catwalks for the season that featured gleaming foil printing, shimmering brocades and fluid looking skirts. Lavin, Marc Jacobs, Jason Wu and MaxMara hit the nail right on the head with their use of metallic that brought a luxe look to even the simplest of silhouettes. For some reason in previous seasons I felt the look to be cheap or tacky but when done right there’s a distinct feel of glimmering richness.

Runway to the street: This is a trend that’s completely transitional to the street. Not to mention, with the holidays around the corner, a perfect idea in a strapless number that you’ll sparkle in at that party you’ve been looking forward to. How to Wear a Fur Vest

If you haven’t already spotted this trend, take it from this trendspotter, fur vests create a major stylish look for fall 2010. It’s a perfect cooler weather transitional piece, one that you can wear over and over again.

It doesn’t matter if you’re pro fur wearing or completely against it, you can strut just about anywhere wearing a faux or real piece and you’ll look hot.

>Cinch it at the waist with a thin belt and jeans

The Nina Ricci fashion house dates back to 1932, when times and fashion were completely different. Nina Ricci’s designs were reveled as romantic, feminine and refined. Although decades have since past, the same remains to be true. Today the Creative Director is Peter Copping. Peter Copping has quite the resume, spending 12 years of working with Christian Lacroix, Sonia Rykiel and Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton. He’s managed to keep with the original image and style of the Nina Ricci brand while making sure it reflects modern times.

The main two keys to Nina Ricci pieces are the detailing in construction and the fabrics! Floral jacquards, draped lace, satin pencil skirts, are all examples of a line truly meant for a polished woman. And with the price tags they come with, a woman with quite a bit of disposable income! My favorite thing about this line is the ability to take a sophisticated woman and dress her in a way that makes her feel sensual and mischievous, but yet there’s nothing else you could think of a woman in Nina Ricci that’s short of CLASSY!

The Best Spring Tops for Work

Feminine tops with touches of romance are among my favorite picks for Spring. Flowing ruffles are so indicative of the season and styles with these frilly details include elegant cascading ruffles down center front to sweet ruffle edged sleeves.

My suggestion for the perfect and suitable place to wear them, to work! Sure they can be great for a dinner date but I totally believe the right style is completely work appropriate and will look best under a tailored blazer or paired with a fitted pencil skirt!

Fun feathery prints draw in the eye and the volume from ruffles can minimize hips and thighs.

Solid tops with conservative high cut necklines are meant for the office and the best ones come in deep jewel tone colors and classic black and white. The tops below all have flattering cuts and show off your figure in the classiest way.

Cool, Smart, and Polished. Did I just describe your kind of style from head to toe? I have a great style tip for you! Cropped trouser pants epitomize those three words! They are so versatile and this fresh take on the new “pants” for Spring will be a hit at the office and on the street.

Here are options for professional and casual looks. Most look best with heels, especially if you’re on the shorter side, since they can cut the legs short. But if you got those long legs you can totally pull off some flats!

For the Office: These styles look best when worn with pumps. Pair them with a tucked in silky top and you’ve got a chic business look. A pleated style is fun but watch the proportion; it can add too much volume around the hips.

For Play: Slouchy, breezy picks are comfy and cute. Pair them with some wedges or flat strappy sandals and a loose long tank. A no fuss look but oh so trendy!

These purses are marvelously convenient one of my favorites is the mini crossbody bags in vibrant bold colors. Interesting and cool little bags were seen on the runways most notably at MARC by Marc Jacobs. He paired his tribal/ethnic prints and looks with these fab little gems. There sure to complete any outfit adding just the right amount of snap, crackle and POP!

Its time to say bye-bye to your wool jackets and say hello to chic trench coats! Though the sun is shinning, there’s still a slight chill, time for something that’s light weight, stylish and versatile. Springs trench coats are just what the Dr. ordered, perfect with any outfit weather dressed up or casual.

There’s a great selection including long to cropped length styles with full length to ¾ sleeves, double breasted, single breasted, and belted/tie waists.

The best light weight fabric coats come in comfy cotton/polyester blends and lush linens. As far as colors go, my suggestion is to stay with classic colors such as tan, white, and black. There are vibrant colors and prints available this season, but these tend to limit your use of the piece.

Now on the other hand if you’re looking to buy suiting that is budget friendly, there are many options for you as well. While these brands cost much less then the first three I visited, they are still great choices and offer some pretty great business separates for a variety of ages and body types. I guarantee one or more of these brands will work for you, so here’s details on what each brand has to offer and extra tips on the fits.

Semantics is a Nordstrom private label brand, which means you won’t find it anywhere else. The majority of its pieces are found in the Point of View department. Nordstrom has really developed this line and made a name for it in the suiting world.

It offers suiting that fits really well on most body types. Its jackets offer extra room in the bust area and also have feminine lapels and trimming. This fit is best for a straight up and down body type. Also their favorite fit, the most universal fit with a medium rise that sits below the waist. This fit works best for a curvy body type, those with a little more tush and/or hips. Their jackets run big, so try going a size or two down from what you usually wear.

Calvin Klein suiting fits similar to Semantics suiting, so it’s good for most body types. The detailing tends to be simpler and comes in basic colors like black, grays, and blues. Also if you like your suiting to be thicker fabric than usual this is your brand.

CK has some gorgeous business dresses that you can pair with a blazer. Like this dress with a light weight flutter sleeve top and skirt bottom with flattering belt. Pair it with their blazer that has contour seaming and secures with a single button for a smart finish.

Halogen is another Nordstrom private label brand, found in the Point of View department. Its fits tend to be much younger than that of the Semantiks brand. Its pants fit straight up and down for a more narrow hip body “boyish” type.

This brand has a lot of separates options with cute jackets, trousers, skirts, blouses, and cardigans. Though Halogen has some stylish youthful detailing watch out for garments that get to be a little too detailed, make sure its evenly styled. For example if it has a stylized lapel on a jacket and decorative buttons make sure the pockets are not too much as far as size and placement.

Elie Tahari is a higher price point suiting brand, with jackets starting at $208+ and pants at $148+. But you really get what you pay for. Some of what this brand features is interesting exposed stitching that adds some appeal and texture, stylish jackets with fun fashionable linings which makes them great for rolling up the sleeves and showing off the colors, and wide legged pants.

Its suiting fits best on a basic body type that’s even from shoulders down to the legs. The Tahari brand offers other more affordable lines in T Tahari and Tahari by Arthur S. Levine, which Ill discuss later in affordable brand options.

Classiques is another higher price bracket brand. Its jackets can start at $248+ and pants $158+. Their suiting tends to be made of light wool and has feminine construction details such as lapels on jackets, ruffle trimmed skirts, and accentuated waistlines. Their pants usually have a wider leg and wide waist band.

This brand offers a great fit in the jacket with extra room in the bust, if it’s hard for you to find jackets that button over your chest you probably will find the perfect jacket in this brand. Classiques also offers a range of polished and fun silk tops appropriate for work or play.

Theory has jackets starting at $ 375+ and pants from $225+. This brand has a lot of basic suiting options with classically styled jackets, pants, and skirts in black, blue and gray. It’s a great brand for suiting staples and it’s versatile.

The pants run narrow in the leg and hip so the fit isn’t for everyone. Theory also does polished button downs that make for great layering pieces. These shirts easily transition from day to night. Take off your blazer unbutton a button or two and throw on some sassy jewelry and you’re ready for after work cocktails with friends or a date!

Whether you choose the exact top or a similar style you’re sure to go out and turn some heads! There’s no better way to look feminine and sexy than in a light gold peach top. This silk chiffon tank is bedecked in shimmering sequin on the front, giving it just the right amount of bling. I’d like to share some secrets with you to finding the right brand of jeans to fit your curves. If you’re like me, you’ve often struggled with finding the right pair of jeans in the past. Some brands just don’t cater to us women with serious curves. Often you have to go up a size in jeans to fit your toosh in them, but you end up with a poor fit in the waist and thigh area. Sound familiar? Keep reading and I’m sure one or more of these brands has exactly what you’re looking for in a great fitting pair of jeans.

The first brand I recommend is Rich & Skinny(this pair $165). The best thing about their jeans is the comfort that comes from the stretch in the denim. For women with curves stretch is our best friend! This pair is a straight leg style with a vintage wash. They can be found at Nordstrom in the Savvy department.
The second brand David Kahn (this pair $178) can also be found at Nordstrom but in the Point of View department. This pair has a mid-rise which is perfect since it offers plenty of room in the back and will come up and over your backside. It’s a trouser style jean with flap pockets that are placed close together and high, which is a key to minimizing a large toosh. They also contain elastane which will give you some stretch.
The third is Cookie Johnson(this pair $161). Cookie Johnson is new to the denim scene but has increased in popularity very quickly. The brand was created by Magic Johnson’s wife and was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show recently. The fit has really made this brand a huge success. It offers a rise that before its inception wasn’t being offered to women. It’s in the middle of a high-rise to a medium-rise. This pair is a straight leg stretch style with a black rinse. I encourage you to go try a pair on. Cookie Johnson can be found at Nordstrom in the Individualist department. Go quick before they’re all gone!

Lastly, there’s 7 for all Mankind(this pair $165). You can find 7’s at many major retail stores including Nordstrom in the t.b.d. department. This pair is a high waisted bootcut style with some stretch that fits well on a curvy body type. The high-rise waistband sits 2 inches below the navel. The fit is very flattering through the hips down into the thighs.

With such a wide selection, it’s great to have some tips to help you select the right pair of jeans for you, that fit right and get you your moneys worth.

Now you’ve got your selections in your favorite styles and you’re headed to the dressing room, here are a few tips that you might not know about when it comes to buying your jeans:

1. Jeans will Stretch
Sometimes jeans can stretch almost as much as a whole size! After purchasing leave on the tags, try wearing your new pair for a couple hours around the house. Walk around, sit down, and bend over in them. Just know that even though that new pair fits perfect in the dressing room, it doesn’t mean they’ll fit like that once you’ve been wearing them for a while. If after an hour of wearing they feel too big don’t be afraid to take them back and exchange for a smaller size.

2. Talk to your tailor
It’s okay to buy a pair of jeans that need tailoring. This may cost extra money but believe me ladies it’s worth it! When going to get them hemmed ask the tailor to reattach the original hem. They may charge more for this service but they’ll look better and keep the original look and style.

3. Pay attention to the wash
It’s easy to re-buy the same wash since you like it so much. But a different wash can make an outfit look completely different. Different washes are going to definitely add some variety to your wardrobe, don’t be afraid to experiment. Another reason to watch the wash you buy is that sometimes manufacturers use heavy dyes and these can leak onto other clothing in the washer machine. It’s best to limit the amount of times you run your jeans through the wash. Try washing them as little as possible like every couple of months. When you do wash them, wash inside out with cold water and hang dry. If they’re crunchy when dry you can put them into the dryer for 10 minutes, this will soften them up. Another good idea is to have them dry cleaned; it can get you months even years more wear out of them.

There are stores with the solution to your denim needs with the hottest trends under $100. Yes you read right, quality, stylish denim under $100. Remember these three stores and you can’t go wrong, Urban Outfitters, Nordstrom, and Old Navy.

At Urban Outfitters look for BDG black and blue skinny jeans. They look great with a high heeled bootie or a knee high boot. Skinny jeans are great for women trying to accentuate their curves. Also check out their selection of Chambray tops, the latest trend to pair with skinny jeans.

At Nordstrom go to the Point of View Department and look for KUT brand jeans in a boot cut style. This pair has flap pockets on the back with an embroidered design. Bootcut jeans are great because they flatter any body type.

Ever notice that womens' button downs never seem to fit quite right? Well the reason may be that you are buying one not fitted for your body shape. Did you know that all clothes are actually designed to fit a specific body shape?

Banana Republic can be a great place to look for button downs as they carry both regular sizes as well as petites. Two Nordstroms brands, Vallette and Classiques, also offer really great fits. The Classiques are especially good for women who have larger chests and need something to fit well through the torso. Nordstroms also carries a brand called Foxcroft which are wrinkle resistant, fit well with women who have full body shapes, and come in every color of the rainbow. This, thank goodness, is no longer the case. With the emergence of some new brands over the last couple of years, you can look hot all day long and not sacrifice that much needed comfort.

Who would have thought that almost three years later and skinny denim is still holding on strong. I encounter many women who are convinced that they can't wear skinny denim, but the truth is that anyone can pull off a pair-- it just takes the right balance.

With dresses over pants and shirts getting longer and longer, often times wearing a trouser jean or a jean with large bell bottoms doesn't work. This is where the skinny denim can be the perfect ingredient. The skinny fit often looks great under these longer items and adds that extra layer of warmth that is oft-needed in the San Francisco and Pacific Northwest.

The Basics Battle

Basics: something we as women wear every day. They are an essential element to layering, creating the longer length tunic look, and achieving a longer and leaner feel in an outfit. The new and exciting battle that has surfaced is that we now have so many different options-- not only when it comes to brand, but now when it comes to price. The old staples are still around like Three Dot (available at www.Nordstrom.com and www.Shopbop.com), James Perse (www.neimanmarcus.com and www.eluxury.com), C and C California (http://www.candccalifornia.com), Zooey (www.revolveclothing.com), and Splendid (www.saks.com). But is it still worth it to pay between $35-65 dollars for a white tee shirt when you can now buy one at Forever 21 or H&M for $10?

If you are like me, you will somehow manage to destroy a white tee shirt in three months flat by staining it, ripping it, or dying it some weird color. So for me, the option of buying a basic that has a lifespan of three months is a great way to go. I have taken to buying basics at H&M and I am fairly impressed with the quality of the cotton and the fit. I, however, still believe there is room for the expensive basics. They offer great style details that are hard to find at other places such as very high quality cotton and longevity.

Whether you choose to invest in your basics or go the cheap route, they are a basic necessity to any great wardrobe collection.

What to Wear at Work

What kinds of messages does your clothing send about you? It’s not a question we spend a lot of time thinking about, but what if it was keeping you from that promotion or new job you really wanted? Are you clear on what your style says? We all know that first impressions matter and that most communication is actually non-verbal so how much of that is being directed by your clothing? I have constructed some simple ways to tell if you are leaving people with the impression you want.

1. Create a Survey
a. Ask friends, family, and coworkers what their description of your style is. For example: professional, sloppy, comfortable, stylish, unapproachable?
b. Does this style match your personality or the working relationships you want to have?
c. What are the pieces in your wardrobe that are a reflection of their feedback?
d. What colors are you wearing that may lead to their opinion of your style? For example: do you wear a lot of red and black that may justify a feedback that you are unapproachable?

There are some easy ways to combat these descriptions of your style without spending a lot of money.

Here is a quick guide:
1. Unapproachable/ Harsh
a. If you wear a lot of solid colors that are either black or primary colors and you’re getting a feedback that you are unapproachable or harsh, try wearing colors that are based more in brown tones such as khakis, creams, light greens, blues and purples.
b. Is your clothing too structured? Clothing that fits well is very important, but are you wearing things that are too structured? For instance, are you always wearing a suit Jacket? Try wearing knits like a great wrap around knit sweater or cardigan instead of a suit jacket.
2. Sloppy/Not Trustworthy/ Young
a. Does your clothing fit your body? Can you grab a lot of extra fabric under your arms when you put on your button down or blazer? Does the shoulder of the shirt actually line up with your natural shoulder? In a button down or blazer these should always match up exactly. Try a new store or new brand to see if it will fit you better-- Banana Republic is perfect for busty women whereas Theory is really good for women who are petite.

Try these new styles for a couple of weeks and then redo the survey. You will be surprised at the results.
